Economy concepts came to life in the fourth grade classrooms last week! Students became producers and created a product to trade with peers. They created products such as lightsabers, origami, stress balls, pet rocks, bookmarks, slime, craft stick airplanes, jewelry, tic-tac-toe boards, and so much more! Owen said, “I had so much fun making my cup and ball game.” They set up booths for their business and designed posters to attract consumers and persuaded them to trade.Students also had the opportunity to create a sales pitch.
The students traded their products with other students to learn about ideas such as supply and demand. They were able to see how items with a high supply had less demand and items with a low supply had high demand. Liam noticed some of the products had a bigger supply such as stress balls, and that made the demand a little lower. “But I was still able to sell out because I kept one,” Liam explained. They also learned about interdependence and relying on others for different goods and services
. It was so much fun to see the excitement in their faces during this hands-on learning experience. Hayden said, “It was a really fun experience and it taught me the importance of supply and demand.” Colin added, “It really helped me understand how the economy works.” This was an experience that fourth graders will remember for a long time!
