Thanks to the generosity of the AppleGate Grant Funding Committee, Mrs. Allan's 4th grade class has taken a significant step toward transforming its classroom learning environments. This exciting initiative has brought 20 inflatable donuts, 12 stadium seats, and 20 floor/seat cushions to one of our classrooms, introducing flexible seating options that prioritize student comfort and engagement.
The Vision Behind the Project
The flexible seating initiative was spearheaded by Mrs. Allan, our 4th-grade classroom teacher, who applied for this grant with the goal of enhancing her students’ learning experience. Recognizing the challenges of traditional classroom setups, Mrs. Allan sought to create a space that would:
Enhance student focus and performance by creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment.
Reduce stress and anxiety through options that support movement and sensory needs.
Foster a sense of ownership by empowering students to choose seating that works best for them.
The seating options are versatile, allowing students to use them on standard chairs or directly on the floor. This flexibility ensures students can seamlessly integrate these resources during various classroom activities, including whole-class lessons, small group discussions, and individual work time.
A More Inclusive Learning Space
In addition to seating options, the project also incorporated sensory strips that students can apply to their desks. These strips help reduce anxiety and improve focus, creating a more inclusive environment for learners who benefit from sensory support.
Student Impact
Since the implementation of these resources, students have enthusiastically embraced the new seating options. Whether during independent work time, Accelerated Reader (AR) reading, or collaborative group projects, students report feeling more comfortable and motivated to learn. The inflatable donuts, stadium seats, and floor cushions have become popular tools that enhance both focus and enjoyment in the classroom.
Gratitude for Leadership and Support
A special thank-you goes to Mrs. Allan for her vision, time, and effort in applying for this grant. Her commitment to her students’ success, innovative thinking, and willingness to go the extra mile have made this initiative possible. Mrs. Allan consistently puts her students first and has shown incredible creativity in thinking outside the box to improve her classroom’s learning environment.
This project was also made possible through the generous support of the AppleGate Grant Funding Committee. Their contribution has not only provided physical resources but also opened the door to reimagining how learning spaces can empower students to succeed.
At Hershey Elementary, we remain committed to fostering environments that nurture academic growth, creativity, and well-being. The flexible seating initiative is a shining example of how small changes can make a big difference in the educational experiences of our students.
Thank you, Mrs. Allan, and thank you, AppleGate Grant Funding Committee, for helping us make this vision a reality!
